Varyag Variations:
haikai on a photograph

Russian Crusier “Varyag” on fire in Chemulpo harbor, February 8th 1904.

the gilded cloud recedes
only to leave day
and its troublesome light

to verbally abuse
hereby
all prefatory catastrophe

strangeness empress herself
has answered
all insistent calls to reason

legend is vile
war is futile in the sand
of a sad photograph

that background sand
which reminds steel in all
its voluptuous perfection

Turner
is insinuated
in the battle of geometry

spectral salt
and stench of military fire
is gone unrecognized

a savagely oriental shape
bedazzles
in still ignition

violent haikai by Monet
in horizontality
through time

floating intricacies of ink
liquefying
in a coarse landscape

ominously luminous
as if capturing death
through cold passage

a composition which predates
abstraction
a warfare shot at Klee

implausibly pompous
wrong figures of speech
under turrets of smoke

something about focus
performing the equation
choosing the frame

the rust against the waves
or the waves against the rust
they opened fire

a tragic anonymity
invades the photograph
which bulges

they sing in black and white
Врагу не сдаётся наш гордый
Варяг
